Leland Blue – Slag Glass
Leland Slag Glass is a byproduct from iron smelting by the Leland Lake Superior Iron Company in the 19th century. Known as “slag”, it was a colored glass mixed with borax and other chemicals that were dumped into the lakes as iron foundry waste. Since waste dumping is no longer in practice the Leland Slag Glass is rare and prized for making jewelry. It is found in a variety of colors from blues to purples to greens.
